Religion, based on something or someone superior, was a
method to control the behaviour of preconceived bad and good guys. As
long as we hominids were just a small band 12-30, banishment and or
death probably handled most problems, at a guess. As we "civilized"
ourselves, then it became a tool of control by those who wanted or had
power. Greek thought came down to us and moved us towards a monotheistic
religion controlled by an unseen deity. Was it perhaps a result of
harsh authoritarian rule that moved us towards a belief in an unseen and
only God as in the Jewish religion? Did Christians devise a Christ
that would allow them to self regulate only themselves? Much of what
religion does starts at the door of a priest, reverend, imam or rabbi
that usually require financial support to try and keep us in
line....Christians, by definition, don't need anyone except their own
conscience. It is unfortunate that Christians didn't realize that we
had not yet evolved to the extent we could self regulate...mayhap
centuries from now. The Middle East went the authoritarian route with
Islam. So the West, ended up with a secular religion based on
politics. Today, it is the politicians of every ilk that demand to
control our lives by laws of their own making. They do not depend on
any God, because they have usurped the role for themselves.
