Neibuhr and Wright? No!

July 20, 2009 8:51am PST

My response to the pewforum.org discussion between Wilfred M. McClay and E.J. Dionne, Jr. on 06/26/09:

Read "Obama's Favorite Theologian? A Short Course on Reinhold Niebuhr", thank you for same.

As one who for the "lack of Grace" didn't have the benefits available to Sotomayor in my time, I enjoy reading what I missed had I gone to college.  However, my only thought for both the gentlemen is that a "Christian" is one that tries to live as Jesus Christ did, not as one of the religions would have them live.  There is no other way!  This is the point that is missed, but, one needs to know exactly what Jesus said, when he said it, in context of time and place.  If I say "gay" to you, you may think I mean to describe a homosexual in this age of ours.  You would be wrong.  But, unless you know me, how would you know that you are wrong.
I would have a bit more support for Obama if he had not sat in Wright's church for 20 years with his wife and then children.  Wright is a hater but he is also into keen self interest.  He is a millionaire and lives among the "white" community in his mansion.  Obama may, in my sole opinion, "thinks" he follows Niebuhr, he would be wrong.  He is into "community organizing" much like communism and, believe it or not, bowling.  Each small group joins with a larger until the entire nation or organization is led by a small group that determines everything.  This is his mistake and it is unfortunate that he also shares Wright's keen "self interest" personal point of view.  We will change the group because we know best....sound familiar?
