A Tarnished Golden Compass??

12/14/07 9:50am PST

First, let me say up front that I am an atheist.  I believe with all my heart that every single human has the right to believe as they wish provided they do not impose that belief on anyone for any reason.  I know that "religion" has been a way to teach, direct and control the more "animalistic" desires of people.  I also know that religion has been and is used to control, to dictate, to kill.  Here is my response via post to the "Golden Compass" review I just finished reading a movie based on the premise(?) that religion is "bad":

We, the human race, may never have the opportunity to "evolve" into a higher intelligence/consciousness/whatever. We have, I believe, finally gotten to the point where our technology will soon be capable of destroying us. Which, might not be a bad thing. Look at where we came from and who we came from as humans and you can understand that what took nearly 6 million years to evolve devolved in less than 15,000 years. Today the "caliphate" is running hard and fast right behind us and we, are running fast and hard away from a formalized religious culture. That is irony.

Religions were a way by which those that led the small bands and communities of humans used to teach, direct and control the more animalistic needs of the members. When the bands ceased to exist and the communities grew very large, the leaders used religion additionally to control all aspects of life for their members.

But, no matter how many gods, one or many, we as homo sapiens, needed then, and need now, the time to evolve to a better level of humanness in order to put aside the hatred and murder that goes on daily is gone. There are too many, too ignorant, too hateful who refuse to use their brains for anything more than money, power and killing. Beam me up Scotty!
